DESTINATION: WestburyThis small quaint town 35km SW of Launceston on the Bass Hwy, has a European history dating to 1828. Westbury's original Georgian and early Victorian buildings clustered around a village green is very much in the style of an English village. Main AttractionsFacing the Village Green, the White House (1841) is now a colonial museum, with a magnificent antique-Georgian doll's house and several original outbuildings (closed July-August). Lovers of handcrafts and collectables will find plenty to interest them in Westbury's fascinating side streets. Three historic build-ings offer B and B accommodation. The beautiful English garden, Culzean, in William St is open Sept-June. Westbury Maze on Bass Hwy is a traditional hedge maze, with more than 3000 privet bushes; there is also a tearoom. Pearn's Steam World has a large collection of working steam-traction engines, which steam up at Easter and during November. Tractor Shed in Veterans Row is a museum of old farm machinery. |
