DESTINATION: WynyardThe pretty north-west coast town of Wynyard is the centre of a prosperous farming district. It is also a popular tourist centre, with an airport on the edge of town. Main AttractionsGutteridge Gardens are attractive parklands beside the Inglis River. There is a Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) interpretive sculpture at the information centre. Scenic walks include a riverside ramble to amazing Fossil Bluff, where the sea cliffs contain thousands of fossils. In the mid-1800s a 20 million-year-old fossil marsupial was discovered at the Bluff; the oldest ever found. |

Scenic flights over the coastline and north-west wilderness areas are available at the airport. The drive or walk to Table Cape, a 170m volcanic plug, passes a colourful patchwork of vegetables, poppies and tulips, with Cape Tulip Farm open for inspection in October. Table Cape, 5km north, has an historic lighthouse and stunning views over a vast stretch of the coastline. Boat Harbour, 15km NW, is considered one of Australia's most beautiful beaches, with white sand, crystal-clear blue water, coral formations, rocky outcrops for fishing and tidal pools. Seals usually visit the bay in late summer. Further west, Rocky Cape NP has many excellent walks, Aboriginal relics, a marine park and lighthouse.
