DESTINATION: Bacchus Marsh

Bacchus Marsh

This town is located between the Werribee and Lerderderg rivers, 49km west of Melbourne. Although close enough to Melbourne to be a commuter town, Bacchus Marsh is surrounded by orchards and market gardens sited on what once was marshland.

Main Attractions

Many buildings, including the Manor House built by Capt William Henry Bacchus in 1846, are classified by the National Trust. Others include the sandstone Court House, built in 1858; and still used today; the gaol; and the National Bank. The avenue of English oaks, elms and plane trees called the Avenue of Honour was planted as a memorial to the citizens of Bacchus Marsh. An extension of Main St, it provides an impressive entrance to the town, and is claimed to be the best stand of elm trees in the world.
