DESTINATION: BairnsdaleThis Gippsland town lies on the Mitchell River flats at the tip of Lake King, 280km east of Melbourne. Bairnsdale and the surrounding district is promoted as the 'Victorian Riviera' with winter temperatures up to 6C warmer than Melbourne. Situated at the junction of the Princes Hwy, the Great Alpine Rd and the road east to Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale is a perfect base for exploring the surrounding region. Main AttractionsSt Mary's Catholic Church is famous for its magnificent wall and ceiling murals painted by Italian artist, Francesco Floreani, in the 1930s. The local museum is located in the old St Andrew's College in Macarthur St. It is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, 1pm-4pm. MacLeod Morass, visible from the museum, is a deep freshwater marsh and reserve with more than 130 species of wildlife. Access to the reserve boardwalk is from Bosworth Rd. The Bataluk Cultural Trail, extending through East Gippsland from Sale to the Cann River, stops at an Aboriginal keeping place in Bairnsdale. Krowathunkoolong, located at 37 Dalmahoy St, has displays tracing Aboriginal culture from the Dreamtime to the present. Bairnsdale Clocks, in Nicholson St, has one of the largest collections of clocks in the country and is worth a visit. |

The information centre has details about self-guided scenic drives, walks and 4WD tours of the area. The picturesque town of Metung, 30km SE, is a fishing village on the shores of Lake King. Mitchell River NP is 45km west and offers excellent bushwalking tracks and the cavern known as the Den of Nargun, a significant site on the Bataluk Cultural Trail.
