DESTINATION: Barwon Heads

A popular fishing, boating and swimming holiday spot, Barwon Heads is located on the estuary of the Barwon River, about 100km from Melbourne. A bridge links Barwon Heads with neighbouring Ocean Grove, 2km away on the eastern side of the river. There is a limestone covered lava bluff protecting the town from the sea which at the same time is responsible for treacherous conditions that wrecked 12 ships on the 1800s. The town was also the 'home' of the ABC television series Sea Change.

Main Attractions

A cairn commemorating the Earl of Charlemont, wrecked in this area in 1853, is located on the Bluff Lookout. The ship's anchor is mounted in a riverside park. Thirteenth Beach, located on the western edge of the township, is ideal for surfing. Calmer waters for swimming can be found at the mouth of the Barwon River. Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Taits Rd. Sick or wounded animals are nursed back to health at the hospital in the grounds. Visitors will find a variety of animals and birds as well as many koalas.

Nearby attractions

Inland from Barwon Heads, the Barwon River fills Lake Connewarre. This large, shallow estuarine lagoon is home to cormorants, ibis, egrets, spoonbills, herons, bitterns, swamp hens and other wildlife. The area is popular for birdwatchers and bushwalkers.
