DESTINATION: BeechworthLocated in the foothills of the Alpine region and 270km NE of Melbourne, this well-preserved 1850s goldfields' town is famous for its fine honey-coloured granite buildings. Over 30 buildings are classified by the National Trust; the town is also notable for its colourful autumn foliage. Beechworth was once the centre of the Ovens goldmining region and the National Trust has classified the whole town. Main AttractionsThe Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct is a series of historically significant buildings from the goldrush era. There are interpretations on police life, the legal system and the history of the town's development. The recordings, heard in various buildings, are sometimes humorous sometimes sad but always instructive. They include messages from people such as Ellen Kelly and Elizabeth Scott and transport visitors to another time. Burke Museum, in Loch St, is named after ill-fated Robert O'Hara Burke, who at one time was officer-in-charge of police in the town. There are relics of the goldrush on display at the museum and a 'strand of time', a re-creation of Beechworth's shops as they were over 100 years ago. The Court House (1858), was the scene of many trials involving bushrangers such as Ned Kelly and Harry Power. The Carriage Museum, in Last St, is located in Murray Breweries, which produces gourmet cordials, such as chilli punch and raspberry vinegar; open 7 days a week. Visitors can still fossick for gold and gems in the area, and maps for this and walking tours are available. |
