DESTINATION: BenallaThis town, 191km north of Melbourne, was Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop's hometown during his early years. The local Court House was the venue for a number of trials involving Ned Kelly. Main AttractionsBenalla has an Olympic-standard heated swimming pool in the aquatic centre located on Mair St. Lake Benalla is popular for swimming and sailing. The artificial lake was created by damming the Broken River in 1974. Benalla Gardens, located beside the lake, are worthwhile visiting for walks through the rose garden and along the lake's shores. The success of the rose garden, established in 1959, led to Benalla earning the title 'The Rose City on the Lake'. The Benalla Art Gallery, also located by the lake, houses the noted Ledger Collection of works by major Australian artists from colonial times to the 1960s. At the Costume and Pioneer Museum; incorporating the information centre; pioneer clothing and artefacts, including the cummerbund worn by Ned Kelly when he was captured at Glenrowan, are displayed. |
