DESTINATION: BrightBright is a picturesque town situated on the Ovens River, 303km NE of Melbourne. The town is conveniently located to the Victorian Alps and the ski fields at Mount Hotham, Mount Buffalo and Falls Creek. Industries important to the local economy include tourism, timber and agriculture. Bright was established after the discovery of alluvial gold in the area. Main AttractionsBright is worthwhile visiting in autumn and spring due to the variety of trees planted throughout the town, including Japanese maples, Lombardy poplars, oaks, elms, bunya pines and dogwoods. Each year the town celebrates the seasons with autumn and spring festivals. There is also an annual autumn art exhibition attracting artists and buyers from around Australia. The town and surrounding area is excellent for bushwalking, trout fishing and cycling. Worthwhile walks include the Canyon Walk along the Ovens River where visitors can see the remains of gold workings. Centenary Park has a children's playground and a deep weir, popular for swimming in summer. |

Nearby attractions
The nearby Alpine NP is also ideal for bushwalkers, with many and varied tracks. Mount Buffalo NP, also nearby, has a variety of wildlife. Boyntons of Bright Winery is located at Porepunkah, 6km NW at the junction of the Ovens and Bucklands rivers. The information centre has details of lavender, deer, emu and berry farms in the district that are open to visitors.
