DESTINATION: Camperdown

Volcanic activity over 20 million years ago shaped the landscape of this Western District town. Surrounded by crater lakes and lying at the foot of extinct volcano, Mount Leura, Camperdown is in the centre of the world's third largest volcanic plain. The town is filled with elegant buildings and avenues of elms. In 1876, school children planted the avenue of elms running for 2km along Manifold St.

Main Attractions

Camperdown has many statues, war memorials and monuments which commemorate the district's pioneers. The town walk takes in many of Camperdown's historic buildings, including the red-brick Court House (now the information centre), bluestone Post Office, Railway Station, commercial buildings and cottages. Camperdown Buggy Museum at 26 Ower St, houses 20 horse-drawn vehicles collected from the district; it is open by appointment only. The Historical Society Museum at 241 Manifold St is open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, 2pm-4pm. The road to the top of Mount Leura leads to a lookout with panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic plain.
