DESTINATION: Castlemaine

Castlemaine

This is a prosperous industrial centre and a popular tourist destination, 120km NW of Melbourne. Castlemaine lies at the foot of Mount Alexander at the intersection of the Pyrenees and Midland hwys and is surrounded by old goldfields. In the 1850s and 1860s, the area experienced a gold boom and the town grew rapidly. Many of the town's fine Victorian buildings were built during these boom years.

Main Attractions

The Castlemaine Market is one of the most impressive buildings in the town. A produce market was held in the building until 1967 and it is now the town's information centre and a gold interpretive centre. Tours of Old Castlemaine Gaol are by appointment. Accommodation is available for visitors wishing to 'spend a night in gaol'. Castlemaine Botanical Gardens is one of Victoria's oldest provincial public gardens. Barkers Creek, located north of the town centre, is an attractive spot for a picnic. Works by many well-known Australian artists hang in the town's Art Gallery and Historical Museum in Lyttleton St.

A guide to the gold digging sites in the area is available from the information centre. Close by are Forest Creek Diggings and Herons Reef Gold Diggings. At the dingo farm in Chewton visitors can learn all about this Australian wild dog. Natural mineral springs are quite common in the area and the most easily accessible is Vaughan Spring, accessed off the road to Guildford.
