Coleraine

This historic township in a lovely Western District valley, is located 323km west of Melbourne. Settled in 1839, this is mainly a pastoral district producing fine wool and beef cattle.


Main Attractions

Matthew Cookes Blacksmiths Shop, built in 1888, and the Historical Society are both housed in the old Court House and open by appointment only. The Chocolate Factory, in Whyte St, is open for daily tastings. Local arts and craft are displayed in the historic Railway Station.

A view of Coleraine and the surrounding countryside can be seen from the lookout in Points Reserve Arboretum, accessed off the Portland Rd. The reserve offers a picnic ground, shade house, walking tracks, children's playground, facilities and BBQs. The arboretum features the largest collection of eucalyptus species in the country. Konongwootong Reservoir, about 9km north on Harrow Rd, is a good recreation and fishing spot, catches include rainbow trout. Between Coleraine and Hamilton are the Nigretta Falls and Wannon Falls, both on the Wannon River. These are popular recreation areas with facilities and walking trails. National Trust-classified historic homesteads in the area include Glendinning Homestead and wildlife sanctuary, located 49km to the north.
