DESTINATION: EildonIn a region that once thrived on timber and goldmining, Eildon, 130km NE of Melbourne, was built in the 1950s to house employees of the Lake Eildon Dam project. Construction of the dam created Lake Eildon; officially opened 1956; the largest artificial lake in Victoria and the main storage for the vast Goulburn Irrigation System. The town is almost surrounded by Lake Eildon NP (Frasers NP). Main AttractionsEildon has become a popular destination for inland waterskiers, wakeboarders, anglers, sailing enthusiasts, canoeists, sailboarders and jet skiers. Over 800 houseboats are moored on the lake, and at Eildon Boat Harbour, boats and equipment of all sorts, including houseboats, are available for hire. There are a variety of self-guided walks, drives and horseriding trails available from the town. |
