DESTINATION: EmeraldThis picturesque township was the first white settlement in the Dandenong Ranges. Emerald, 49km east of Melbourne, attracts many visitors. Main AttractionsEmerald Lake Park offers a footbridge over the lake, waterslides, children's wading pool, picnic tables, BBQs, tearooms and walking trails; pedal boats can be hired here. A major attraction, the Puffing Billy steam train runs between Belgrave and Gembrook, Emerald and the park are two of the train's stopping points. In April the Great Train Race is held, where runners race Puffing Billy from Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park. Emerald is also home to the largest model railway in the Southern Hemisphere. Emerald Lake Model Railway has around 35 model trains, open Tues-Sun, 11.30am-5pm. |

The Motorist Cafe and Museum has many heritage cars on display and is located in Main St, Gembrook, 14km east of Emerald. Sherbrooke Equestrian Park, 3km west, organises horseriding treks. The Puffing Billy Steam Museum is at Menzies Creek, 4km NW of Emerald, and is open weekends, Wednesdays and public holidays.
