DESTINATION: Heyfield

A prosperous timber-milling and tourist town, Heyfield is 195km SE of Melbourne. It is located in the centre of a dairying and beef cattle district based around the Thomson River and Glenmaggie Weir.


Main Attractions

Heyfield offers many recreational activities, including golf, fishing, horse racing, yachting, power boating, bushwalking and trail bike riding. Local timber mills produce kiln-dried hardwood and several of them are open for inspection.

Heyfield is ideally located as a departure point for tourist drives in the Maffra region. This region has many art and craft shops, markets, antique shops, general stores, galleries and pottery studios. The scenic drive to Licola offers many natural attractions. There are several tracks and river crossings for 4WDing. Lake Glenmaggie, 11km north, is popular for boating, swimming and fishing. Between June and September, excellent cross-country skiing conditions can usually be found north of Licola, in the region of Mount Tamboritha and Mount Skene.
