Horsham

Situated 300km NW of Melbourne, Horsham is located in flat, open country and services a vast rural district producing wheat and livestock. Horsham is regarded as the capital of the Wimmera region and is a good base for travellers intent on exploring the Grampians, and Little Desert NP among others.


Main Attractions

Horsham Art Gallery features the Mack Jost bequest and includes a Rembrandt, drawings by Hans Heysen and Lambert, several Charles Bush paintings and Charles Blackman's Nocturnal Landscape. The Botanic Gardens are laid out along the banks of the Wimmera River. A lemon-scented gum and a bunya pine stand sentinel at the entrance to the gardens, which were designed in the 1870s by William Guilfoyle, the curator of the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens.

There are many daytrips visitors can make from Horsham. To the south there are Black Ranges SP, Rocklands Reservoir and the Grampians. To the west, Mount Arapiles attracts climbers from around the world. Little Desert NP protects many endangered native plants and animals. Next to this national park, in the town of Dimboola, is the Australian Pure Olive Oil Company. The plantation of 20 000 trees, which is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, was planted in 1945 and covers 121ha. Fishing for trout and redfin is popular in Green Lake, 13km SE and Taylors Lake, 18km SE.

Region: The Grampians

Almost one-third of Victoria's indigenous flora, 35 species of native mammals, 200 bird species and 27 reptile species reside in the unique habitat of the Grampians. Activities include rockclimbing and abseiling, bushwalking and camping out in the rugged bushland. more
