DESTINATION: KerangLocated 280km north of Melbourne and around 30km from the Murray River, Kerang is the centre of a large rural area. Lakes, waterways and swamps are around the town. The waterways are breeding grounds for many waterbirds, including the protected ibis; walking and flying pest controllers, especially valued for their appetite for locusts. Main AttractionsMore ibis breed in the rookeries around Kerang than anywhere else in the world. An estimated 200 000 white ibis, straw-necked ibis and the rare glossy ibis nest each spring. There are major rookeries located at Middle and Third lakes to the west of Kerang. A hide at Middle Lake allows easier viewing. The best time to see birds soaring gracefully over the lakes and waterways is early morning or evening. Some of the lakes are suitable for watersports. Lake Charm is good for waterskiing, while First Lake offers a pleasant picnic area and the shallow water is ideal for swimming. Lester Lookout Tower, once the town's water storage, houses the Gemstone Museum and offers some regional information for visitors. The climb up the 83 steps to the top of the tower is worthwhile for the view. |
