Lakes Entrance

Situated on a permanent artificial opening to the Gippsland Lakes waterways, Lakes Entrance is a popular summer resort and active fishing port with 100 vessels, many of them engaged in deep-sea fishing. Lakes Entrance is located at the eastern end of the largest inland lakes system in Australia.


Main Attractions

The greatest attractions of the area are the beaches and waterways. Famous Ninety Mile Beach (145km long) is a narrow stretch of sand, backed by extensive sand dunes, separating the Bass Strait and the lakes. A footbridge over Cunningham Arm connects the surf beach with the esplanade. Ferry services and cruise boats offer a variety of ways to explore the lakes. Boats of all kinds can be hired for sightseeing, sailing or fishing expeditions. There are also a number of excellent launching places around the lake. The Fishermen's Cooperative on Bullock Island offers freshly caught fish for sale.

Wyanga Park Vineyard and Winery is 10km north and can also be reached by boat. Nyerimilang Heritage Park is 10km NW and the East Gippsland Botanic Gardens, also here, offer pleasant walks in relaxing surroundings and rose-pruning tips in July. Lake Tyers Forest Park, to the north-east, is an ideal spot for bushwalking, picnicking and camping.
