DESTINATION: MaldonEstablished in 1853, this uniquely preserved gold town lies 16km NW of Castlemaine, on the slopes of Mount Tarrengower. Maldon is 136km NW of Melbourne, and is a popular destination for daytrips. The town has managed to retain its 19th-century streetscapes. Preservation is so complete that in 1996, the National Trust declared it the 'First Notable Town in Australia'. Main AttractionsMaldon is a particularly popular destination during the Maldon Easter Fair and also in spring when the wildflowers put on a magnificent display. Today, Maldon's buildings and the renovated shops sell craft, pottery and antiques. Lookouts on Mount Tarrengower and Anzac Hill offer panoramic views of the town and surrounding districts. Brochures on a self-guided walking tour of the town are available from the information centre. Clydesdale Treks and Tours depart from the Blacksmith and Wainwright's Shop in High St. On Wednesdays, Sundays, public and school holidays, the Victorian Goldfields Railway operates steam train rides. In spring, the graves at the historic Pioneer Cemetery are covered with jonquils and wildflowers. |
