Mansfield | VictoriaThe rural town of Mansfield lies in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, 200km NE of Melbourne. The area is renowned for its scenery. Summer visitors include bushwalkers, horseriders, anglers, watersports enthusiasts and those enjoying weekend getaways. Skiers descend on the area in winter. The region and some of its attractions have also been popular with film makers. The Man from Snowy River, as well as Cool Change and The Far Country were filmed here. Main AttractionsThe town achieved notoriety when 3 policemen were ambushed nearby and shot dead by the notorious Kelly gang in 1878. Their graves are in Mansfield Cemetery and a monument in their memory stands at the centre of the town's roundabout. Local tour operators offer various ways to see the countryside and mountain scenery, including horseriding safaris into the Victorian Alps, camel treks, 4WD tours and hot-air balloon flights. |
