DESTINATION: MilduraThe Murray River city of Mildura is surrounded by irrigated land that produces grapes, citrus, olives, avocados and asparagus. Its river setting, sunny winters and plentiful accommodation make this town a popular holiday destination. Main AttractionsSandy beaches and swimming holes line the riverbanks. River cruises are available on the PS Melbourne Sun-Fri, 10.50am and 1.50pm. The PV Rothbury cruises at the same times on Saturdays. Every Thursday this boat offers a day cruise to Trentham Winery. Bookings can be made through the information centre. In 1915, a series of 13 locks, weirs and water storages were built along the river. Lock 11 is in Mildura and visitors can see it in operation as vessels move from one level of water to another. A walkway links the lock to Lock Island, created when the canal was constructed and now an ideal spot for picnics. Old Mildura Homestead has been relocated to a reserve on Cureton Ave, near the Murray River. There is a collection of pioneer-style buildings and a woolshed where displays illustrate the role of irrigation in the development of Mildura. Rio Vista, the original home of William Chaffey, the first mayor of Mildura, in Cureton Ave, is now a museum displaying colonial artefacts. The house is part of the Mildura Arts Centre, a complex with a theatre, museum and an art gallery with a good collection of paintings and sculptures; the centre is surrounded by parkland. |

Nearby attractionsThe Sunraysia district can be explored on the 30km self-drive Chaffey Heritage Trail through the city and surrounding areas. There are many wineries in the area, including the huge Lindemans Karadoc Winery, 20km south. Woodsies Gem Shop, 6km east at Nichols Point, has rock cutting and grinding displays, 11am and 2.30pm daily. There is also a gift shop, garden maze and restaurant. Murray-Sunset NP and the smaller Hattah-Kulkyne NP lie south of Mildura. Birdlife is prolific in both parks but particularly so in Hattah-Kulkyne when the Murray River floods the Hattah Lakes system, creating a bird haven and transforming the landscape with carpets of wildflowers. latest stories
