DESTINATION: MorwellA busy commercial centre in the heart of the famous coal-producing Latrobe Valley, Morwell is 150km SE of Melbourne. Main AttractionsTours of Hazelwood, Yallourn and Loy Yang open-cut mines and power stations can be organised at the Powerworks Visitors Centre. Visitors can inspect the operations, see the dredgers working the coalfaces and the coal being conveyed to the power stations, and see the inside of a power station. Group bookings of 20 or more people can request an evening tour that includes dinner. The Latrobe Regional Gallery and the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden are both located in Commercial Rd. The rose garden is renowned for being the most significant in rural Victoria. |

Most popular photosNearby attractions5km south of Morwell is Hazelwood Pondage. Heated by the power station, the warm waters provide a year-round venue for watersports. Morwell NP, 12km south, offers walking trails through a high ridge of stringybark forest and through moist areas studded with tree ferns and cool gullies with clear mountain streams; this is one of the few remaining areas of remnant vegetation in the Strzelecki Ranges.
