DESTINATION: Nagambie

Situated on the shores of Lake Nagambie in the Goulburn Valley, Nagambie is surrounded by land devoted to sheep, cattle, cereal, grapes and horses. The town hosts several annual, water-based events, including rowing, canoeing, speed boating and waterskiing on Lake Nagambie.

Main Attractions

Constructed in 1887 through the establishment of the Goulburn Weir, Lake Nagambie is a watery playground. Nagambie Historical Museum, housed in the old Court House and shire hall, features period-furniture, horse-drawn vehicles and a collection of old coins. The Nut House, located at the tourist information centre, displays and sells different varieties of nuts grown in Australia. There are antique and stained glass shops in town. Nagambie also offers skydiving, hot-air ballooning and gliding for the adventurous.

Nearby attractions

There are many wineries within easy reach of the town. Classified by the National Trust, the Chateau Tahbilk Estate, located 6km SW, is the oldest winery in Victoria and overlooks the Goulburn River. Points of interest at this most charming winery includes the unique architecture of the old buildings, an avenue of mulberry trees, and old cellars. At Mitchellstown, 14km SW, the award-winning Mitchelton Winery has a good restaurant, underground cellars, museum and art gallery. The information centre offers a self-drive tour map of local wineries. The Goulburn River is popular with trout and redfin anglers, and canoeists who can hire boats here. Goulburn River Cruises offers daytrips on the Major Mitchell starting at Tahbilk Estate and finishing at Mitchelton Vineyard.
