DESTINATION: Nathalia

This small rural town located on the Murray Valley Hwy, 54km NW of Shepparton, is surrounded by agricultural land that was settled in 1843. Wheat, barley and dairying are the main agricultural activities of the district. Reflecting the local concern for the environment, the town has offices of the Dept of Natural Resources and Energy and the Rural Water Commission.

Main Attractions

The town was set on each side of Broken Creek in 1879. Blake St, the main street, was modelled on Sturt St, Ballarat. This attractive street has a central plantation leading down to Broken Creek where several old buildings can be seen, including the Court House Hotel and a row of 19th-century shops with verandahs. The historical museum displays memorabilia, old photographs, maps and books. The museum is housed in what was once the Mechanics Institute, built in 1887.
