DESTINATION: Nhill

Nhill

Nhill, halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide, is a wheat and wool town in the Wimmera region. The town is surrounded by a number of national parks, wildlife areas and is within easy driving distance of Lake Hindmarsh, 45km north, and Little Desert NP.

Main Attractions

The Historical Museum is located in McPherson St and is open by appointment. The Draught Horse Memorial is located in the main street. Sculptured by Stanley Hammond, the memorial celebrates the Clydesdales that hauled the agricultural machinery and wagons in the past. The single-bin wheat silo, claimed to be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, is located in Davis Av. There is a self-guided historical walk of the town and brochures are available from the information centre.

Nearby attractions

A desert in name only, Little Desert NP, located 18km south, offers 600km of walking tracks to explore. To avoid temperature extremes, the best time to visit the park is late winter to early summer, this is also the time when the wildflowers bloom. There is a wildflower exhibition held here in October. A variety of accommodation is available, including motel, hotel, caravan and camping facilities. Big Desert NP, located 52km NW, is quite remote and access is via 4WD or on foot; tours are available. Some roads are impassible in wet weather.
