DESTINATION: OmeoLocated 401km NE of Melbourne on the Great Alpine Rd, this lovely mountain township is the southern gateway to the magnificent scenery of the Victorian Alps. Omeo is a cattle township and tourist centre servicing the nearby Alpine NP. Main AttractionsOmeo Historical Park, is a precinct with a number of historic buildings, including the American Romanesque-style Court House (still in use) built in 1892 to dispense justice to what was reputed to be Australia's roughest goldfield. Positioned around the Court House are the log gaol, last used in the 1980s, stables, a blacksmith's shop, waterwheel and museum. Omeo is an ideal base for bushwalkers attracted to the tracks in Alpine NP. White-water rafting is popular on the Mitta Mitta River. An excellent view of Omeo is provided from Mount Mesley. Access is via a walking track leading up from Livingston Creek that runs through the town.
