Orbost

A farming and administrative town on the Snowy River, Orbost is 374km east of Melbourne and 14km from Marlow Inlet, where the river reaches the sea. Orbost is surrounded by stunning coastal and mountain scenery.

Main Attractions

The information centre is set in the Rainforest Botanic Gardens, in Lochiel St, and is run by Lakes and Wilderness Tourism. Combined with tourist information displays, there is an audiovisual exhibition, which interprets the ecosystems of the East Gippsland rainforests and rainforests in other parts of the world. The landscaped grounds feature rainforest species, creeks, waterfalls, pathways and boardwalks. Orbost's Slab Hut is a living museum. Originally built 40km away, it is now located in Forest Rd. The hut's humble furnishings illustrate the spartan lifestyle of pioneers. More local memorabilia can be seen in the historical museum located in the Orbost Business Centre, Nicholson St. The museum is open 9am-5pm weekdays. Netherbyre Gallery, in Browning St, displays woodwork, local paintings and a gemstone collection.
