Ouyen

This town, located 107km south of Mildura, began to grow in 1910, when the surrounding land was opened up for settlement and clearing for wheat, oats and sheep. Queues of trucks waiting to unload their grain at the silos are a common scene here at harvest time.

Main Attractions

Ouyen's pioneers cleared many thousands of stumps in their efforts to create farming land from the mallee scrub, which covers the region. A memorial to their labour is the largest mallee stump in Australia, placed beside the Calder Hwy on the southern side of town. The Local History Resource Centre is located in the old Court House and comprises a significant collection of books, photographs, documents, maps, newspapers and cassettes.

Hattah-Kulkyne NP, located 36km north, offers an extensive system of lakes and waterways that provide refuge for thousands of birds. Bushwalking and canoeing are popular activities here and the wildflower display is stunning in spring. Murray-Sunset NP, 60km west, contains unique Pink Lakes; under bright sunlight these salt lakes glitter white, while overcast conditions produce a dull pink hue. Vegetation in this park includes native pine and mallee scrub. Birdlife is abundant and birdwatchers can spot emus, red-rumped parrots, mulga parrots and pink cockatoos.
