DESTINATION: PaynesvilleAt the centre of the Gippsland Lakes system, surrounded by the waters of Lake King and Lake Victoria, Paynesville is the recreational-boating capital of the lakes. Main AttractionsSeveral operators offer a range of boats for hire or charters to explore the surrounding waterways, lagoons and islands. The Church of St Peter-by-the-Lake is located in Newlands Dr. Built in 1961, it has a seafaring theme, with a limestone brick spire designed to look like a lighthouse and a pulpit resembling the bow of a fishing boat. Most popular photosNearby attractionsRaymond Island, on the other side of McMillan Strait, can be reached by car ferry from Paynesville. Popular with bushwalkers, the island is inhabited by native birds and animals, including koalas. Those with a boat can access Rotamah Island, south of the town, as well as the Lakes NP on Sperm Whale Head. The Mitchell River Silt Jetties are situated at Eagle Point. They stretch for nearly 10km towards the north-east shores of Lake King in the Gippsland Lakes. The silt jetties are second in size only to those on the Mississippi River in the Gulf of Mexico. They were formed by the deposition of large quantities of silt brought down the Mitchell River in floods over the last million years. latest stories
