DESTINATION: Rawson

This mountain township was formerly the site for workers on the Thomson Dam; the dam was completed in 1983 and is the largest earth and rock fill dam in the Southern Hemisphere, with a dam walling 165 metres high.

Today Rawson’s role is as a base for nature appreciation, horse trail rides, 4WD tours, rafting, fishing and bushwalking, and is a popular base for exploration of Mt Baw Baw National Park. Located at what is believed to be a crater lake, Rawson also features numerous picnic spots in pleasant surroundings for visitors to enjoy.

Recreational activities include a heated indoor pool, tennis and squash courts, while its accommodation ranges from a caravan park, lodge and holiday units to a major conference and holiday resort.

Nearby attractions

Thomson Dam Park provides magnificent views across the reservoir from the Silvertop picnic area. The dam harnesses the water of the Upper Thomson River to supplement Melbourne’s water supply via an underground pipe through the Great Dividing Range into the Upper Yarra Reservoir. The Thomson River is a heritage river and is one of Victoria’s leading venues for fishing. Close by, at Mt St Gwinear, you can enjoy cross-country skiing and snowplay over winter and hiking and climbing during the warmer months.
