DESTINATION: Red CliffsLocated 559km NW of Melbourne and 8km south of Mildura, Red Cliffs was first considered for fruit growing in the 1880s. After WWI, the government assisted soldier settlers to clear large tracts of land for irrigated agriculture: the biggest venture of its kind ever undertaken in this country. A 45 tonne steam tractor, Big Lizzie, was built in Melbourne and was originally destined for Broken Hill. Instead, it cleared the mallee vegetation around Red Cliffs from 1917 to 1924. Main AttractionsBig Lizzie never made it to Broken Hill. The resting place of this huge piece of machinery is Barclay Square, opposite the Railway Station. Cliff View Lookout offers views of the 70m-high red cliffs from which the town gets its name. |
