DESTINATION: RutherglenLocated 265km NE of Melbourne, Rutherglen is Victoria's leading wine producer. There are many vineyards in the area and all the way south to Milawa and the King Valley. The first vines were planted in 1859 and Hamilton's Clydeside Cellars was established after the discovery of gold in 1861. Seppelts bought the property from the Hamiltons in 1916 and established Seppelts Clydeside Winery. Main AttractionsRutherglen's main street has retained its historic streetscape with all but 3 shopfronts dating back to the late 1880s and early 1900s. The Victoria Hotel, Post Office and old Court House are classified historic buildings. Brochures on walking tours of the town are available from the information centre. The local history museum is located in the town's first government school, known as the Common School (1872), which is in the grounds of the local primary school. The museum opens Sundays, 10am-1pm, Oct-June. Australia's largest wine festival, Winery Walkabout is held on the Queens Birthday long weekend in June. |

Maps are available from the information centre. Cycling tours of the wineries are popular and bicycles can be hired from the information centre.
