Sale originally developed as a result of its strategic location on the route to major gold diggings. It is located 209km SE of Melbourne in the heart of Gippsland. The city is a gateway to an area of rich natural attractions, including the High Country, wetlands and Ninety Mile Beach.


Main Attractions

Of historic interest is Bon Accord homestead, built in the 1860s, it is open Fri-Sun and Devonshire teas are available. Notable buildings include St Pauls Cathedral and Rectory (1885); Bishops Court (1903), the residence of the Bishop of Gippsland; and the convent of Notre Dame de Sion (1892), designed by the convent's first Mother Superior. The Botanic Gardens, off Foster St, are located on the shores of Lake Guthridge which is connected by walkways to Lake Guyatt. This is a most pleasant walking and picnicking area. In the same street is the Ramahyuck Aboriginal Corporation, selling local arts and crafts. The Bataluk Cultural Trail, which begins at the Sale wetlands contains 12 sites of significance to the Gippsland Aboriginal people.

Nearby attractions

Sale Common Wetland and State Game Refuge, is a protected wetland of mainly freshwater marsh. A 450m-long boardwalk provides views of permanent and migratory bird species' habitats. Holey Plains SP, 14km SW, has 530 species of native flora and fossils can be seen in a limestone quarry wall. Popular rivers for fishing include the Avon, Thompson and La Trobe.
