DESTINATION: Sassafras

Sassafras has always been a popular weekend destination for city dwellers since the area was first settled in 1894. Close to Melbourne, Sassafras village has maintained its original charm, attracting visitors to its cafes, restaurants and tea rooms, speciality shops, quality boutique accommodation, antique shops and scenic drives to national parks and gardens.

How to get there
Sassafras is 45 minutes from Melbourne on the Burwood Highway through Upper Ferntree Gully. Travel east on the Monash Freeway from the city and exit at Ferntree Gully Road.

  • Take tea at Miss Marples tea room and restaurant, an authentic English cottage inspired by Agatha Christie
  • Shop at local specialist shops. Don’t miss Melbourne’s largest range of candles at Bluestone Candles, and choose from over 300 varieties of tea and a large range of teapots at Tea Leaves
  • Pick up local wine and produce at Ripe, or Sassafras General Store and Café
  • Browse unique wildlife and nature art and craft at the award-winning Wise Possum Nature Shop
  • Relax and breathe the mountain air at the Village Green
  • Visit the Sherbrooke Forest and the Dandenong Ranges National Park for its nature walk trails, waterfalls, wildlife, lush sun-dappled fern gullies and picnic grounds with full facilities
  • Visit the beautiful Alfred Nicholas or George Tindale gardens
  • Walk the 13-kilometre Sassafras Creek Forest Trail along the mountain stream to Emerald.
