Shepparton

Considered the capital of the Goulburn Valley, Shepparton is a thriving regional city, 180km north of Melbourne. Irrigated by the Goulburn Irrigation Scheme, Shepparton is known as the 'Food Business Hub of Australia'.


Main Attractions

Shepparton Art Gallery, in Welsford St, has an outstanding ceramics' reputation, housing 3000 works from the 19th century to the present day. In addition, it has works by notable artists, including Streeton, McCubbin and Perceval. The region's history is preserved in the Shepparton Historical Society Museum and is housed in Shepparton's first public hall, on the corner of High and Welsford sts. At Victoria Park Lake, the grassy banks invite visitors to picnic or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the foreshore. The Shepparton Arts Festival, held in March, is a major event spread over 2 weeks.

Nearby attractions

The Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum in Tatura, 13km SW, houses one of the best collections of memorabilia from the prisoner-of-war camps that were once located in the area. The annual Taste of Tatura, a food and wine festival, is held in March. Ardmona KidsTown is a 'must visit' for families, offering giant slides, a flying fox, miniature railway and much more; it is located between Shepparton and Mooroopna.
