Sorrento | Victoria
This town, located on a strip of land between Port Phillip and Bass Strait on the Mornington Peninsula, has been a popular holiday destination since the 1890s. Then, people came to Sorrento via paddlesteamer and the steam tram. Sorrento has much to offer: surf and bayside beaches are easily accessible and there are upmarket shops and eateries along the main street. Main AttractionsMany of the shops are housed in historic limestone buildings. The peninsula's highest point, Arthur's Seat, can be seen from town. This area was the site of Victoria's first European settlement in 1803 (abandoned in 1804). The Collins Settlement Historic Site on Sullivan Bay marks the site and there are also 4 early settlers' graves located here. There are several self-guided walks around Sorrento, passing many fine examples of Victorian architecture. The Queenscliff-Sorrento Car and Passenger Ferry departs from Sorrento Pier, on the front beach. Many other charter tours, including dolphin watching and seal watching also leave from here. Sorrento Museum, one of Victoria's top museums, displays memorabilia from pioneering days. |

Most popular photosNearby attractionsCruises to the Pope's Eye Marine Reserve are available. Here, there is a gannet rookery and snorkelling and diving opportunities. The seaside township of Portsea is 4km NW. Swimming and fishing from the pier are popular here. Mornington Peninsula NP protects much of the dramatic and diverse coastal environments. Tours of the former Quarantine Station on Point Nepean, established in 1852 to protect the colony from diseases brought in on ships. Tours are available on Sundays and public holidays.
