DESTINATION: Swan HillSituated on the banks of the Murray River in the north of the state, Swan Hill is renowned for its pleasant climate, with more sunny days than Queensland's Gold Coast. This major holiday destination is 335km NW of Melbourne. Main AttractionsThe river and surrounding waterways are popular for fishing, boating and watersports. Swan Hill's renowned Pioneer Settlement is a 7ha open-air living history museum. Set out as a Mallee township of the Riverland pioneers from the 1830s to the 1930s it has authentic buildings and the re-created streets include a replica 1860 coach house, a Post Office, an 1854 iron house, newspaper office and printery. It is also where traditional skills, such as printing, blacksmithing and woodturning are still practised. There are daily cruises offered on the paddleboat Pyap. The Gem, once one of the largest passenger boats on the river, rests at the entrance to the Pioneer Settlement. There are 6 golf courses in the region, including the excellent Murray Downs Golf Course. Many local walks offer stunning river scenery. |

Furnished as a typical squatters' residence, it features Aboriginal artefacts found on the property. The homestead is open for tours during public and school holidays or by appointment. There are 2 wineries close to Swan Hill: Buller's Winery at Beverford and Best's Winery near Lake Boga. Both are open for tastings and sales.
