Terang

This Western District town, located 216km west of Melbourne, is a service centre for an irrigated farming district. Terang is noted for its horseracing facilities, early 20th-century architecture and wide tree-lined streets.


Main Attractions

The National Trust has classified much of the town, particularly the broad, oak-lined High St with its Gothic-style sandstone Presbyterian Church. The District Historical Museum houses some interesting memorabilia. The Lions Walking Track is 4.8km long and passes alongside National Trust-classified dry Lake Terang.

Nearby attractions

Noorat, 6km north of Terang, is the birthplace of Alan Marshall, author of the Australian classic novel, I Can Jump Puddles. The Alan Marshall Walking Track leads to the summit of an extinct volcano with excellent views extending to the Grampians. Lake Keilambete, 4km NW, is said to have therapeutic properties, as it is 2.5 times saltier than the sea. Also worth visiting is the Ralph Illidge Wildlife Sanctuary, 17km south.
