Wonthaggi

Originally a black-coal mining town, today this South West Gippsland town is a prosperous industrial and commercial centre. In an area characterised by rugged coastline, beaches and fishing activity, Wonthaggi is a good tourist base within easy reach of Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory.


Main Attractions

The State Coal Mine Historical Reserve has reopened Eastern Area Mine and offers underground tours conducted by former coal miners. There is also a museum featuring mining activities. The historical reserve is open daily, 10am-3:30pm. The Wonthaggi Historical Society displays local memorabilia which is housed in the Wonthaggi Railway Station, it is open Saturdays 11am-1pm.

Nearby attractions

Cape Paterson, 9km south, is located in the Bunurong Marine Park. The surf beach here is popular and there is a more sheltered beach for swimming. There are also excellent snorkelling and scuba-diving opportunities. From Cape Paterson to Inverloch, a scenic road winds 15km through the Bunurong Cliffs Coastal Reserve. A coastal track offers walkers an alternative route through the reserve. Brochures are available from the information centre on this and other walks in the area.
