Woodend | VictoriaThis small township, 69km NW of Melbourne, is surrounded by the Macedon Ranges. Woodend became a resort town after the gold rush and has retained its old-world atmosphere. Main AttractionsWoodend is characterised by quaint shops in the main street, old hotels, a bluestone Anglican Church and a stone bridge built in 1862, which spans Five Mile Creek. The clock tower was built as a WWI memorial. The Insectarium of Victoria is located in town on the Calder Hwy. The Insectarium has expanded its exhibitions to become the largest insect and related invertebrate research centre in Australia. |

Most popular photosNearby attractionsHanging Rock is Woodend's most popular attraction. Located 6km NE of the town, this huge rock formation was made famous by Joan Lindsay's novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and then by the film of the same name. Visitors can discover the history, mystery and geology of the rock at the new Hanging Rock Discovery Centre. Nearby Hanging Rock Winery produces a range of quality red, white and sparkling wines. It is open for tastings and cellar door sales. There are over 15 wineries in the region. Mount Macedon is located 10km east and there is a huge memorial cross at its summit.
