Bridgetown

Picturesque Bridgetown, 94km SE of Bunbury, is situated in the Blackwood River Valley area on the banks of the Blackwood River. A temperate climate and high rainfall support karri forests, farmland, plantations and wildflowers, which attract many people, including photographers and artists.


Main Attractions

Bridgedale was built by one of the town's first European settlers. Restored by the National Trust, it is a good example of an 1850s homestead. Blackwood River Park near Blackwood Bridge, is an ideal picnic spot. Memorial Park on Hampton St is another pleasant recreation area and panoramic views are provided from Suttons Lookout, off Phillips St. Bridgetown Pottery and Restaurant in Hampton St, is a working studio, and the information centre houses a local history display and the fascinating Brierley Jigsaw Gallery, with its amazing collection of jigsaw puzzles. A pamphlet details a self-guided walking tour of historic buildings, including St Paul's Church (1911), notable for its Gordon Holdsworth collection, including an award-winning lectern.

Nearby attractions

Local agricultural, mining and timber histories can be discovered driving along the 52km Geegelup Heritage Trail. Approximately 20km south is the 19th-century Donnelly Well, sunk to water horses on the mail run. Beautiful Bridgetown Jarrah Park, 25km west, is an educational and recreational park, demonstrating the unique ecosystem of jarrah forests; there are walking trails and a BBQ area.
