Bunbury | Western AustraliaWestern Australia's second largest town, Bunbury is 185km south of Perth on the Leschenault Inlet at the junction of the Preston and Collie rivers. With a temperate climate, accessibility to attractions, and its natural harbour, Bunbury is both a thriving port town; exporting timber, mineral sands, alumina and other regional cargo; and a popular holiday destination. Main AttractionsKoombana Bay, protected by a breakwater, has ideal conditions for waterskiing, boating and fishing; a historic jetty runs parallel. A highlight of the Dolphin Discovery Centre, in Koombana Dr, is supervised swimming with regularly visiting dolphin pods, which can also be seen from harbour cruises. Opposite is a Mangrove Boardwalk through the southernmost mangroves in Western Australia and habitat for more than 60 bird species. Signs on the Shipwreck Trail provide details of the area's early explorers. King Cottage (1880) is a museum furnished with items from 1870 to 1920. Opposite is Forest Park with a miniature railway running every third Sunday. Big Swamp Wildlife Park, in Prince Philip Dr, includes a penguin pool and walk-in aviary. Centenary Gardens, in Princep St, with its wishing-well, is a favoured spot for picnics. The distinctive chequered Lighthouse on Ocean Dr, Boulters Heights, and Marlston Hill are popular lookout points. |
