Dampier

A port town built in the 1960s, Dampier overlooks Hampton Harbour in King Bay, 20km from Karratha. Water recreation activities and accessibility to the islands of the Dampier Archipelago are premier attractions. Exports from Dampier's busy harbour include iron ore, natural gas and salt.


Main Attractions

Loading 400 million tonnes of ore annually Hamersley Iron Port Facilities conducts tours by arrangement with the Karratha Tourist Centre. Recreation is popular in the area, including boating, windsurfing, fishing and diving. Popular swimming spots include Dampier Back Beach and nearby Hearsons Cove.

Nearby attractions

North-east is the Burrup Peninsula renowned for its 10 000 Aboriginal rock-art sites, best viewed on a tour. Also on the Peninsula is the Northwest Shelf Gas Project onshore operations, which pipes natural gas from offshore fields 130km north of Dampier. Its information centre is open weekdays. Dampier Archipelago NP comprises 42 islands within a radius of 45km of Dampier and is considered one of the country's best fishing spots. Archipelago tours and fishing charters depart from Dampier boat ramps.
