Fitzroy Crossing

Fitzroy Crossing, located beside the Fitzroy River, is a growing outback centre providing services and supplies to Aboriginal communities and the Kimberley's cattle and mining industries. A base for visiting Kimberley attractions, local conditions should be checked first as roads are subject to seasonal flooding.

Main Attractions

The oldest hotel in the Kimberley, the legendary Crossing Inn (1897), was a stopping point for travellers poised to make the sometimes perilous river crossing. Nearby is the Pioneer Cemetery. The original site for Fitzroy Crossing was 5km NE of its present location; the move occurred with construction of the bridge and re-routing of the highway. Remnants of the old town site are worth visiting.

Nearby attractions

Part of a 350-million-year-old Devonian coral reef, the limestone cliffs of Geikie Gorge NP contain layers of fossilised fish and are dotted with caves. This 14km gorge, 18km north of the town, is best seen from a boat cruise or Aboriginal Heritage cruise, both can be booked at the information centre. Crocodiles, and stingrays and sawfish adapted to fresh water, can be seen in the river.

The Kimberley is one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. Covering an expanse of nearly 423,000 square kilometres and with an estimated population of just 30,000 it has fewer people per square kilometre than almost any other place on earth. more
