DESTINATION: Halls CreekHalls Creek is the site of Western Australia's first payable gold discovery in 1885. The township, 2855km NE of Perth, is located at the centre of the Kimberley, adjacent to the Great Sandy Desert. Today it services local Aboriginal communities, pastoralists, and tourists seeking access to nearby national parks. Main AttractionsRussian Jack Memorial, on Thomas St, is a tribute to a gold digger who pushed his sick friend 300km in a wheelbarrow to seek medical help in Wyndham. Also in town is an art outlet on the Duncan Hwy selling quality local Aboriginal art. |

China Wall, 6km east, is a natural white quartz rock formation. A further 9km east is Caroline Pool, an ideal picnic and swimming spot. Past the ruins of the original Halls Creek town site (16km east), are 2 swimming and picnic spots: Palm Springs, 41km east, and Sawpit Gorge, 43km east, both are on the Black Elvire River. Halls Creek serves as a base for excursions to Purnululu NP (Bungle Bungles), with its spectacular ancient rock formations (155km NE) and to Wolfe Creek Crater, 148km south. The 50 000 year-old meteorite crater is the world's second largest, measuring 800m wide and 49m deep.
