Kalbarri

On the southern bank of the Murchison River estuary, almost surrounded by national park, the coastal town of Kalbarri, 591km north of Perth, is a popular holiday destination in a region famous for its fishing, wildly beautiful scenery and Mediterranean climate.


Main Attractions

Leisure activities range from adventurous abseiling, horse and camel riding, and canoe safaris, to scenic flights, dolphin-watching cruises, and boat rides on the Murchison River. Whale-watching trips run July-Nov. Black Rock Café and Museum on Grey St has a small collection featuring dolls, shells and gemstones. Pelicans are handfed daily on the river foreshore.

A highly recommended surfing beach is Jakes Corner, 3.5km south. Close by is Red Bluff for swimming and climbing. Rainbow Jungle is an Australian parrot breeding centre and rainforest bird park. In 1629, 2 mutinous seamen from the Batavia were banished to the shore, making it the first European settlement in the country and a unwitting prelude to later events; a cairn at Wittecarra Creek marks the site. The 1860km Kalbarri NP contains intricately-carved sandstone river gorges, rugged coastal cliffs and more than 850 recorded species of wildflower. Highlights are The Loop Gorge and Z Bend Gorge, 30km NE, and views from Hawks Head and Ross Graham Lookouts, 39km east. The park has both short and strenuous walking trails.
