Margaret River

The centre of Western Australia's renowned wine-growing region, Margaret River is renowned for its wines, surfing beaches, stunning coastal scenery and awesome cave systems. Built on the banks of the Margaret River, it also provides an ideal base for exploring the South West peninsula from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin.


Main Attractions

Rotary Park and Historical Settlement is a pleasant riverside park for picnics and the starting point for Heritage Walks. An Old Settlement Historical Museum is on Bussell Hwy. Galleries featuring local wares include Margaret River Gallery, Kookaburra Crafts, Melting Pot Glass Studio and Margaret River Pottery. A free surfing guide brochure outlines the best beaches and general conditions. Additional active options include surfing lessons, canoeing, forest secrets tours, caving trips, abseiling, and winery tours.

Nearby attractions

Brochures trace the trail to the region's wineries, which are concentrated in Cowaramup, 10km NE, and Willyabrup, 20km north. Other regional produce includes cheese outlets along the Bussell Hwy and at the Cheese Factory, 4km north. National Trust-administered Ellensbrook Homestead (1853), pioneer home of the Bussell family, is 15km NW. Birds of prey can be seen at Eagles Heritage, 5km south. Nearby is the Bellview Shell Museum. Marron Farm, 9km SE, has trout fishing and delicacies made from marron while, 15km SE, the Berry Farm and Winery has fresh seasonal berries and produce. Ten Mile Brooks Dam, south-east, is popular for bushwalking. Four of the region's more than 150 known caves are open to the public by guided tour: Mammoth Cave, 21km SW, has fossilised remains; Lake Cave features an underground stream and interactive caving centre 'CaveWorks'; Jewel Cave has a 5m straw stalactite; and Ngilgi Cave at Yallingup has shawl limestone formations. Adventure caving tours are taken through Moondyne Cave.
