DESTINATION: MerredinMerredin, 259km east of Perth, is the commercial centre for this region which grows 40% of Western Australia's wheat. It is a major station along the Kalgoorlie to Perth railway route. Main AttractionsAs the second line of defence in the event of a WWII westerly invasion, Merredin's Military Museum recounts an interesting era. It is also the starting point for the self-guided Merredin Peak Heritage Trail, which takes in such notable sites as Cummins Theatre (1926) and the Old Town Hall (1913). Highlights among the rail memorabilia featured at the Old Railway Station Museum include a G117 steam engine built around 1897. The wheat storage depot in Gamenya Ave is proudly the Southern Hemisphere's largest horizontal wheat silo with a storage capacity of 220 000 tonnes. Recent additions to the depot facility have earned it fame as Australia's largest inland port. |
