Newman

Newman, 450km south of Port Hedland, is a Pilbara iron-ore mining town originally built by Mount Newman Mining Company in the 1960s as a base for its employees.


Main Attractions

Located at the information centre is the BHP Iron Ore Silver Jubilee Museum and Gallery, recounting local mining history through memorabilia and displays. The centre is also the departure point for tours through Mount Whaleback Mine, the world's largest open-cut iron-ore mine, and the starting place for a 30min walk to Radio Hill Lookout with views of the town and Opthalmia Ranges.

When water levels are adequate, Opthalmia Dam, 19km south, provides an oasis for swimming, sail boating and picnics. A 4WD only Waterhole Circuit Trail highlights local waterholes and Aboriginal art sites. Rugged Karijini NP (Hamersley Range), 2hrs NW, features walks to spectacular gorges and contains Western Australia's highest peak, Mount Meharry. Organised ecotours of the Pilbara region can be booked in Newman.
