DESTINATION: Norseman
Gateway for travellers crossing the Nullarbor via the Eyre Hwy, Norseman, 190km south of Kalgoorlie, has been a gold-mining town since 1894. Main AttractionsThe goldrush was started by a horse; so the mythology goes. And 'Norseman', the horse reputed to have turned up gold while pawing with its hoof at the dirt, is commemorated with a statue in Roberts St. A Historical Collection of local mining and other memorabilia is on Battery Rd and the 33km Norseman's Heritage Trail follows a route once travelled by the Cobb & Co Coachline. A toy museum, Dollykissangel, is on Roberts St. Gem fossicking permits are available from the tourist information centre. |

A pleasant picnic area, the Dundas Rocks, 22km south, have been dated at more than 2 million years old. Buldania Rocks, 28km east, is also a picturesque picnic spot renowned for its seasonal wildflowers. The area has experienced a number of booms and busts, with fluctuating gold prices. The towns of Kalgoorlie/Boulder and Coolgardie, were the products of the 1890's gold rush era and still sit on one of the richest gold mining area known to man. more
