DESTINATION: NorthamGazetted as a town in 1836, picturesque Northam in the Avon Valley sits at the junction of the Avon and Mortlock rivers, servicing a rich agricultural region. Main AttractionsHeritage buildings covered in a Town Walk pamphlet reflect the town's early settlement, such as the Town Hall (1897), Old Police Station (1866), Flour Mill (1871), National Trust-classified Sir James Mitchell House (1905) and the restored Shamrock Hotel (1886). The Avon Valley Arts Society Gallery is also included on the route and early settlers' graves can be found near the golf course. Morby Cottage (1836) functioned as the first church and school and is now a museum. The Old Train Station Museum is on Fitzgerald St. The very pretty Avon River, ideal for picnics, has one of Australia's longest suspension bridges and is home to Northam's famous white swans; descendants of a flock brought here from England by an early settler. |
